Dare to Compare: 2019 Toyota Tacoma vs 2019 Nissan Frontier
If you need the convenience and capability of a truck but don’t want to give up good fuel economy and maneuverability in small spaces, a midsize pickup is just what you need. At first glance, the 2019 Nissan Frontier might seem like an attractive choice thanks to its relatively low starting price, but closer inspection reveals that it simply doesn’t stand up to top competitors such as the 2019 Toyota Tacoma.
The Toyota Tacoma entered its current generation in 2016 with a major overhaul from its predecessor. It’s rugged but not intimidating; modern but not futuristic. It’s a good-looking truck that looks at home anywhere, from the worksite to the city. The Nissan Frontier, on the other hand, hasn’t had a major redesign since 2005, and its age shows. If you care about the way your truck makes you look, you might want to stay away from the Frontier.
Engines & Capability
Both trucks are offered with a four-cylinder engine and a V6 engine, but those in the 2019 Nissan Frontier are nothing to write home about. The 2019 Toyota Tacoma’s four-cylinder makes more power than the Frontier’s four-cylinder, and its V6 also makes more power than the Frontier’s V6. Additionally, both Toyota engines are more efficient than both Nissan engines; in fact, the most efficient of the bunch — the Toyota V6 — is also the most capable of them all with a towing capacity of 6,800 pounds.
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma comes with all of the toys and safety tech we’ve come to expect from any modern Toyota vehicle, such as an advanced Entune® touch-screen infotainment system and the Toyota Safety Sense®-P suite of active safety technologies that includes adaptive cruise control, front automatic emergency braking, and more. Meanwhile, the 2019 Nissan Frontier’s tech is as outdated as the rest of the truck — a touchscreen system isn’t even standard, and safety tech is virtually nonexistent.
Between the 2019 Toyota Tacoma and the 2019 Nissan Frontier, we think it’s obvious which truck any prospective truck owner should buy: the Tacoma. Test drive it today at Toyota of Gastonia — we think you’ll agree with our assessment!
