History & Culture
Charlotte was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a German princess, thus earning it the nickname, “Queen City.” Not long after, it was referred to as “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” by a British commander during the American Revolutionary War. That earned the city its second nickname, “The Hornet’s Nest.” Since then, hornets have served as a symbol of Charlotte’s unconquerable spirit.
