History & Culture
Gastonia was incorporated in 1877, the same year that the Reconstruction ended. From there, the city’s textile industry grew, thanks in part to the crossing of two railroads in the city. Much like the original population, many of Gastonia’s residents are of English, German, and Scotch-Irish descent. Today, Gastonia owes much of its popularity to the growth of the textile industry.
