2020 Toyota Tacoma Engine Specs

Tacoma Powertrain Performance

Under the hood of the Toyota Tacoma, you’ll have two different engines to choose from. Both are offered with rear-wheel drive (4×2) and 4-wheel drive (4×4) configurations. Plus, both deliver on high-end fuel economy to go along with their impressive power outputs. The options are:

  • 2.7L 4-cylinder: Matched to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, the base engine on the Tacoma is a 2.7L inline-four that makes 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque.
  • 3.5L V6: You’ll also have the option to step up to increased power via a 3.5L V6 engine that generates 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This setup comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Bumping up to the V6 engine will return an 18 city/22 highway MPG1, while sticking with the base 4-cylinder engine gives you an impressive 20 city/23 highway MPG.1

Toyota Tacoma Towing Power

Toyota Tacoma Towing and Payload

Most pickup truck shoppers are looking for a vehicle that is capable of handling a real workload. The 2021 Toyota Tacoma delivers on that front, too, with a max towing capacity of 6,800 pounds and a max payload of 1,440 pounds. If you opt for the available Tow Package, you’ll also get the Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) system, which is able to send braking pressure to individual wheels in order to reduce sway and stabilize your trailer.

Toyota Tacoma Off-Roading

Off-Road Capabilities

If you thought that buying a compact or midsize pickup truck meant having to compromise on off-road adventures, then you’ll be excited to see what the 2021 Toyota Tacoma can really do. Opting for the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road or the TRD Pro trim levels will give you access to some intuitive and inspiring technology, including:

  • Multi-Terrain Select with CRAWL Control
  • Locking rear differential
  • Hill Start Assist Control
  • TRD Pro front skid plate

These various technologies and systems work in unison to provide traction as you scale off-roading slopes. It’s not all automated, however, as the Multi-Terrain Select option gives you the chance to manually move through different drive modes to better prepare yourself for ever-changing terrains!
